In light of all that is going on in this crazy world we will always have the ability to maintain and improve our health and wellness. I know it is not the easiest goal or most important thing on your mind but to get in a workout can improve your overall health as well as clear your body of stresses going on. In this article I am going to outline how you can get in an efficient workout from home with little to no equipment to jump start your day and stay healthy!
What Do I Need To Start?
When you think of a workout you would typically think you need weights or big clunky cardio machines to achieve a decent workout within your home. This is not the case and I have found that some at home workouts I have been doing with just body weight have been killer and even better than some when I had the luxury of being able to go to a gym. That does not mean having a few helpful items around won’t be beneficial as they definitely will allow variation and endless workouts.
Jump Rope: This is a great option to have as long as your living quarters can permit the height of the rope. This can be used for warm up or as an excellent source of cardio one that I recommend can be found on Amazon
Resistance Bands: For me these are the most useful and affordable item to use. I have linked my personal set that I use and the variety of resistance means you can use them for just about everything. They can be used for any and all styles of working out. Strength training is my preference and they are best used as weight alternatives by tying them to a pole or stepping on them to hold them down.
Workout Mat: This can be used to perform any category such as yoga, Pilates, meditation, but also can be used for general strength training or HiiT workouts to cushion the ground. A non-slip mat is going to be your best friend as a cheap mat will keep sliding out from underneath you and I cannot think of a more annoying thing.
Finding your training style
Similar to what brought you to the gym your goals can be the same or if quarantine has been rough on you we can set new goals and expectations to work towards while trapped at home. If you are looking to shed a few pounds High intensity cardio focused workouts will be your ideal option and there are tons of free options such as Instagram live or YouTube. If you are into weight lifting and do not want to lose all of your strength we can achieve a great workout using the combination of Bands and Dumbbells if you have them available.
Tips and Where to start
- Find an exercise partner. You’ll be less likely to find excuses when you’ve arranged to work out with a friend.
- Schedule your workouts, have a plan and hold yourself to it. Look at a planner and write out your exercise appointments one month in advance. If something comes up and you have to change one, reschedule it immediately.
- Use a journal to track your progress and jot down any breakthroughs you may have. When you have a bad day, write that down and you will know where to improve next time around.
- Make sure to treat the workout as if you were at the gym or where you would normally workout.
- Eat a meal if that is normally what you would do before working out or take any supplements you typically take
The internet is going to be your best friend for at home workouts. From YouTube, to Instagram and even your personal gym everyone is putting out content. Another option if you have the financial means is to participate in more tailored and personal sessions that you can pay for from a facility or studio that you might never get to physically go to such as Rumble Boxing.
Once you find what you wish to follow or you could even structure your own workout depending on your experience level you will need to find a room or go outside to give your self enough room to do the exercises. Make sure if you live with parents, siblings, kids or a spouse you let them know you will be working out and need an hour or whatever amount of time alone with no interruptions to get an efficient workout in. The at home workout is easy to get distracted and ruin your workout my best advice is pop in some headphones get zoned in and get to it!!
Go on and Crush It!!!
As much as working out is going to keep you in physical shape it is also such a key to mental health as well. Remember what you put in now is going to get you through the craziness in the world and prepare you to show off your amazing body and attitude when you can finally go out and catch up with friends.
Remember to just get it done. It is such a rewarding feeling to crush a workout and either start your day or end it depending on when you complete your workouts.
